Best Weekend Getaways from Manila
When the city gets to be too much, Metro Manila is surrounded by escapes a few hours away. Here are the best weekend getaways from Manila, sorted by how far you have to go and what you get for the drive — plus how to line them up with a long weekend.
Under two hours
Tagaytay — the default, and for good reason. Sixty kilometres south, high enough on the ridge for a real temperature drop, looking down on Taal Lake and the volcano within it. Batangas — Nasugbu, Calatagan, and Laiya on the eastern side. Two to three hours, and the closest real coast to the capital. Anilao, further round, is the country's best-known dive and macro-photography destination.
Rizal — Antipolo and Tanay — under two hours east, for the hillside view of the metro, Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo (genuinely excellent), and the Masungi Georeserve in Tanay, which requires advance booking and is worth the effort.
Two to four hours
Zambales — San Antonio, Pundaquit, and the boat trip out to Anawangin and Nagsasa coves. Volcanic-ash beaches ringed with pine-like agoho trees, and a very different landscape from the standard white-sand postcard.
Pampanga — under two hours, and the food capital of the Philippines. Go for sisig where it was invented, the San Fernando lantern makers, and Mount Pinatubo's crater lake as a 4x4-plus-trek day trip.
Laguna — Pagsanjan Falls, the hot springs of Los Baños and Calamba, and Nagcarlan's underground cemetery. Close enough to be easy and often overlooked.
Subic and Bataan — the former naval base at Subic for water sports, wreck diving and duty-free, and Bataan for the war history and the beaches at Morong.
Four hours and beyond
Baguio — five to six hours north, and the only place in reach where you will genuinely want a jacket. Burnham Park, the market, BenCab Museum, and in February the Panagbenga flower festival. Book far ahead for any holiday weekend. See things to do in Baguio.
Sagada and the Cordilleras — a further five hours past Baguio, for hanging coffins, caves, and rice terraces. This needs three days, not two.

Palawan — not a weekend trip at all, but the destination everyone asks about: the Underground River, El Nido and Coron. Give it a week rather than squeezing it in.
La Union — five to six hours, and the surf capital of northern Luzon. San Juan is the centre, with a well-established surf, cafe, and hostel scene. For the country's best-known surf, Siargao is a flight rather than a drive.

Planning notes
- Leave early. Southbound on SLEX and northbound on NLEX both back up from mid-morning on Saturdays. A 5am departure regularly saves two hours.
