Things to Do in Siargao: Cloud 9, Island Hopping and the Lagoons
Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island off the northeast tip of Mindanao, and it has become the Philippines' best-known surf destination — a place that went from a hard-to-reach break known mainly to travelling surfers to an island with direct flights and a full hospitality economy in about a decade.
It is also more than a surf island, which is what a lot of first-time visitors underestimate.
The surf
Cloud 9 in General Luna is the famous wave: a hollow, powerful right-hand reef break with a boardwalk and viewing tower built out over the reef. It is a genuinely serious wave and it is not a beginner break — it breaks over shallow reef and the lineup is competitive.
For learning, the island has better options:
- Jacking Horse, near Cloud 9, is the standard beginner wave — mellower and more forgiving.
- Quiksilver and other nearby breaks suit intermediates.
- Pacifico, in the north, is quieter and less crowded.
- Surf schools are plentiful in General Luna, with lessons and board rental widely available.
Season matters. Swell is most consistent from roughly August to November, which is also typhoon season — the two are related. March to June is generally calmer, better for beginners and for island hopping, with smaller waves. December to February sits in between.
If you are coming to learn or to swim, the calmer months are better. If you are coming for Cloud 9 at its best, you are coming in the wetter half of the year.
Island hopping
The standard day trip visits three small islands off General Luna, usually in one boat circuit:
- Naked Island — a bare sandbar with no trees at all. Bring shade; there is none.
- Daku Island — the largest, with palms and a beach, where lunch is usually served.
- Guyam Island — a tiny palm-topped islet, the postcard shot.
It is a half to full day and boats are arranged from the General Luna waterfront or through your accommodation. Go early to avoid both the heat and the crowds.
Beyond the beaches
- Sugba Lagoon, near Del Carmen — a startling green lagoon in mangrove country, with a diving platform and paddleboards. It requires a van transfer plus a boat and is a half-day minimum; book ahead, as boat slots are limited.
- Magpupungko Rock Pools, in Pilar — natural tidal pools in a rock shelf, only accessible at low tide. Check the tide table before you go, or you will arrive to find the sea over them.
- Maasin River — the palm leaning over the water, and a rope swing.
- Tayangban Cave Pool and the Taktak Falls.
- Del Carmen mangrove forest — one of the largest mangrove reserves in the country, best seen by boat.

The airport is about an hour by van from General Luna, where almost all accommodation is. Flights are on small aircraft and sell out in peak season — book well ahead, and be aware that weather cancellations happen.
Practical notes
- General Luna is where most accommodation, restaurants and surf schools are. Pacifico and Burgos in the north are much quieter.
- Rent a motorbike to get around — it is the standard way, and the island roads are good. Wear a helmet; accidents involving inexperienced riders are common.
- Bring cash. ATMs on the island are few and run dry, especially at weekends. Many places do not take cards.
- Power and water interruptions happen. It is an island.
- Reef shoes are worth having for the reef breaks and rock pools.
- Four to five days minimum. With travel time, a shorter trip is mostly transit.
A note on growth
Siargao's rapid development has brought real pressure — waste management, water supply and construction have all struggled to keep pace, and the island was badly hit by Typhoon Odette in 2021. Staying at places that manage waste properly, refusing single-use plastic, and respecting the reef are not gestures here; they are the difference between the island lasting and not.
