Things to Do in La Union: Surf Town, Cafes & the Elyu Weekend
La Union — Elyu, as everyone under forty calls it — is northern Luzon's surf town and the most reliable weekend escape on the northwest coast. The centre of it is San Juan, a stretch of coastline about five to six hours from Manila that went from a quiet surf break to a full weekend economy of hostels, cafes, bars and board rentals in little more than a decade.
It is not the best surf in the Philippines. It is the most accessible good surf, which is a different and more useful thing.
When to go
This is the single most important planning decision, because La Union has two completely different personalities depending on the season.

If you are coming to surf, come between October and March, and ideally on a weekday. If you are coming to swim, sunbathe and drink coffee, the off season is more pleasant and considerably cheaper.
Weekends in surf season are genuinely busy: the break gets crowded, accommodation fills, and the road from Manila backs up.
Learning to surf
San Juan is one of the best places in the country to learn, because the beach break is forgiving and the instructor scene is well established.
- Lessons are widely available along Urbiztondo Beach, typically sold as an hour or two with a board and an instructor included.
- Board rental is cheap and available everywhere along the strip.
- Beginners should go in the off season or early in surf season, when the waves are smaller. Peak-season swell is not a good first lesson.
- Go early. Morning conditions are usually cleaner, and the crowd is thinner.
- Reef shoes are not required at the main beach break, which is sand, but the rocks at some spots warrant care.
The cafe and hostel scene
This is what turned La Union from a surf spot into a destination. Urbiztondo and the surrounding roads hold a dense concentration of specialty coffee shops, brunch places, craft beer bars and design-conscious hostels — a scene that grew up alongside the surf and now draws people who never touch a board.
It is a small strip, walkable end to end, and the character is closer to a beach town in Siargao or Canggu than to a traditional Philippine provincial resort. That is either the appeal or the problem, depending on what you came for.
Beyond the beach
- Tangadan Falls, in San Gabriel — a short trek and a swimmable pool with a cliff jump. The most popular inland trip.
- Ma-Cho Temple in San Fernando — a Taoist temple overlooking the sea, and a reminder of the province's Chinese-Filipino community.
- Bacnotan and the northern coast — quieter beaches away from the San Juan strip.
- Pindangan Ruins — the remains of an 18th-century church in San Fernando.
- Halo-halo at a roadside stop — La Union is on the standard route north, and the coastal road has been feeding travellers for generations.

TPLEX has cut the drive substantially over the years, but Friday evening northbound and Sunday afternoon southbound are both heavy. Overnight buses are a genuinely good option: you sleep through the journey and arrive for the morning surf.

Practical notes
- Two nights minimum. One night is mostly driving.
