Things to Do in Legazpi and Albay: Mayon, Cagsawa & Bicol Food

Legazpi is the capital of Albay in the Bicol Region, and it exists in the shadow of one of the most photographed mountains on earth. Mayon Volcano is famous for having the most nearly perfect cone of any volcano in the world, and on a clear morning it dominates the entire province.

It is also an active volcano, which shapes everything about visiting: access to its slopes depends on the current alert level, and the ruins at its foot are there because of what it did.

Mayon, and how to see it

The mountain is frequently wrapped in cloud, particularly in the afternoon. Early morning is the reliable window — if you want the classic unobstructed cone, be up at dawn.

Viewpoints worth the trip:

  • Cagsawa Ruins, in Daraga — the belfry of a church buried by the 1814 eruption, standing in a field with Mayon behind it. This is the definitive Philippine landscape photograph, and it is genuinely as good in person.
  • Lignon Hill, just outside Legazpi — a short climb or drive for a panorama of the city, the gulf and the volcano.
  • Daraga Church — a baroque church on a hill, itself a National Cultural Treasure, with the volcano as backdrop.
  • Sumlang Lake in Camalig — the reflection shot, with bamboo rafts on the water.
  • Quituinan Hills and the Albay countryside for the wider view.

Climbing Mayon is restricted and depends entirely on the PHIVOLCS alert level. It has been closed to climbers for extended periods, and the volcano has erupted repeatedly in recent decades. Check the current alert status before planning anything on the slopes, and do not attempt an unguided ascent.

Things to do around the volcano

  • ATV rides across the lava field toward the base of Mayon — the standard Legazpi activity, run by several operators from jump-off points near Cagsawa. Muddy, fun, and as close to the mountain as most visitors get.
  • Cagsawa Ruins Park, which combines the belfry, a small museum and souvenir stalls.
  • Ligñon Hill Nature Park — zipline, ATV, and the viewing deck.
  • Camalig caves — Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave, with chambers and an unlikely history as a wartime shelter and, later, a dance hall.

Donsol and the whale sharks

Donsol, in neighbouring Sorsogon, is roughly an hour and a half to two hours south of Legazpi, and it is the Philippines' most defensible whale shark destination.

The distinction matters. In Donsol the sharks are not fed — interactions are with wild animals encountered on their own terms, from a boat, with a limited number of swimmers, and no guarantee of a sighting. That is a genuinely different proposition from provisioned feeding operations elsewhere in the country, and it is the reason conservation organisations point to Donsol as the model.

Season is roughly December to May, peaking around February to April. Outside that window sightings are unlikely and the operation largely pauses.

The food

Bicolano cooking is the spiciest in the Philippines and leans heavily on coconut milk and siling labuyo.

  • Bicol Express — pork in coconut milk with a serious quantity of chilli.
  • Laing — dried taro leaves simmered in coconut milk. The regional benchmark.
  • Pinangat — taro leaves wrapped around fish or pork, tied and cooked in coconut milk. Distinct from laing and, many argue, better.
  • Sili ice cream — chilli ice cream, sold at Cagsawa and elsewhere. More novelty than dish, but genuinely good.
  • Pili nuts — Albay is the centre of production. Roasted, candied, and in tarts.

Practical notes

  • Getting there — Bicol International Airport, near Daraga, serves Legazpi with flights from Manila and Cebu, and the terminal itself has a Mayon view. Buses from Manila take roughly 10 to 12 hours.
  • Getting around — tricycles and jeepneys within Legazpi; hire a van or a driver for the Cagsawa, Daraga and Camalig circuit, which is spread out.
  • When to go — the dry months, roughly February to May, for the clearest Mayon views and the whale shark season. Bicol sits squarely in the typhoon belt from roughly June to November.
  • Allow two to three days, more if adding Donsol.
  • Check PHIVOLCS before you travel, and again before any activity near the volcano.

FAQ

Why is Mayon famous? It has the most nearly perfect volcanic cone in the world, and it is highly active.

When can I see Mayon clearly? Early morning. The summit is often cloud-covered by midday, especially in the wet season.

What are the Cagsawa Ruins? The belfry of a church buried by the 1814 eruption of Mayon, standing in a field with the volcano behind — the classic Philippine landscape view.

Can you climb Mayon? Access is restricted and depends on the PHIVOLCS alert level. It has been closed for long periods. Never attempt it unguided.

Where do I see whale sharks? Donsol in Sorsogon, one and a half to two hours south. The sharks are not fed there, which makes it the more defensible operation. Season is roughly December to May.

How do I get to Legazpi? Flights from Manila and Cebu into Bicol International Airport, or 10 to 12 hours by bus.

What should I eat? Laing, pinangat and Bicol Express — and pili nuts to take home.
